HOW TO: STAY HEALTHY AS THE MONTHS GET COOLER
Over the last week I’ve noticed that it’s really started to get cooler…
Which means that winter is really on its way (no matter how I wrote that all I could hear was GOT!). I actually love this time of year. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a summer girl through and through. I love everything about it. The sticky, humid heat. The long days. Beach sessions and all things BBQ! Winter though has it’s own special magic. Here are my top tips for not just surviving but making sure you thrive through these cooler months.
Eat for the season
There is a lot to unpack here so i’ll make sure I don’t turn this into a novel. Winter is all about comfort but we can go the wrong way with comfort food. If you are looking for something to warm up your body and soul then think hearty soups, fragrant curries, herby stews and my favourite - one-pot, one-tray, one-pan meals. Flavour, flavour, flavour! It’s also important to pick your ingredients to match the season. Citrus fruits, green leafy veg, brussel sprouts (I love these bad boys when they are cooked well) and all things pear and apple! My biggest tip for eating for winter - bring out the slow-cooker!!
2. Get your H20
Just because it’s not hot it doesn’t mean you can forget about your water intake. If you want to avoid those nasty bugs then get your true fill of hydration. Think herbal teas, warm water with lemon, mint and any other flavour combo that makes you happy as it cools. Make sure you don’t increase your milk or sugar intake with the hot drinks though.
3. Keep moving + get outside
Make the most of those crisp days and throw on a puffer, pull on those boots, grab your headphones and go. Get off the bus a stop earlier. Park further away from your destination. Take a well earned walk at lunch. Getting outside is not just good for the body but for the mind. Feeling sunshine and fresh air will do wonders for you and increase your energy levels.
4. Be social
It’s really easy to go into complete hibernation mode over winter but make sure that you create the time and space to catch up with friends and family or get out to shows/events that make your heart sing. Get out and be social or host your own gathering (and use that slow-cooker!!) and spend the time chatting, connecting and laughing. Your mind, heart and soul will love you for it!
5. Get the ZZZ’s
Not to contradict #4 but also create the space to rest and sleep. The better rested you are the better that you are able to handle the change of season and people that are suffering from the winter blues. There is a reason that sleep, food and movement are three of the key pillars of my coaching and why I see a nutritionist myself! Sleep in fact is the #1 thing that I tell all my coaching clients to focus on first to get their lives from dull to thriving. Have early nights. Spend time reading (an actual book!) instead of in front of a screen. Have a warm bath filled with oils or salts (or shower if you don’t have a bath) and take the time to turn the space you sleep into a clean, clear, luxurious space that you can’t wait to relax into.
